New enrolments - International degree students
Dutch higher education institutions received 48,139 new enrolments from international students for the academic year 2025-26. Germany is the most common country of origin for newly enrolled international students. It is followed by Italy (2nd), Spain (3rd), Romania (4th), and Belgium (5th).

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) enrolls the most international degree students, followed by Maastricht University (UM) and the University of Groningen (RUG). Over half of all students at UM are international.

These two groups generally report poorer mental health than Dutch students. In this article, we provide an overview of existing research on their well-being.
