New enrolments - International degree students

Dutch higher education institutions received 48,139 new enrolments from international students for the academic year 2025-26. Germany is the most common country of origin for newly enrolled international students. It is followed by Italy (2nd), Spain (3rd), Romania (4th), and Belgium (5th).

Well-being of international and refugee-background students

Research

International students and students with a refugee background constitute a significant share of the student population in the Netherlands: an estimated one-sixth. These two groups generally report poorer mental health than Dutch students. In this article, we provide an overview of existing research on their well-being.

Internationale studenten en studenten met een vluchtelingenachtergrond vormen in Nederland een aanzienlijk deel van de studentenpopulatie: naar schatting ongeveer een zesde. Deze twee studentengroepen melden doorgaans een slechtere geestelijke gezondheid dan Nederlandse studenten. In dit artikel geven we een overzicht van bestaand onderzoek naar hun welzijn.

In 2025, there were 16,120 graduates with an orientation year permit. China was the most common county of origin for the holders of this permit, followed by India, Iran, Türkiye and Indonesia.

Researchers from outside the EEA

This dashboard presents data on researchers from outside the European Economic Area who work in the Netherlands as PhD candidates, paid researchers, or unpaid researchers with a grant. In 2025, there were 15,200 researchers from outside the EEA in the Netherlands. China was the most common country of origin, followed by India, Iran, Türkiye, and the United States. 80% of these researchers worked at a research university, with TU Delft employing the largest number.
