Empowering ASEAN’s Future Through Inclusive Higher Education
Education is the cornerstone of a thriving society, shaping the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. The ASEAN Policy Forum on Higher Education 2024, held in Vientiane, Lao PDR, brought together policymakers, academics, industry leaders, and youth to explore how higher education can drive sustainable development in the region. With the theme “Moving Higher Education Forward Together: Building Resilience and Flexibility by Connecting and Including All”, the forum underscored the urgent need for inclusive, adaptive, and future-ready education systems.
A key takeaway from the discussions was the importance of closing the gap between policymaking, research, and student experiences. As highlighted by representatives of the Youth Sounding Board for the EU in ASEAN (YSBEA), Young voices at the forum raised a critical question: “Why is it not like what we want?”—a powerful reminder that meaningful progress requires more dialogue and collaboration. The need for a “common space” where all stakeholders—students, educators, policymakers, and industry—can co-create solutions was a recurring theme.

This call for collaborative action will be further amplified at the upcoming EU-ASEAN Policy Dialogue on Higher Education, themed “The Sustainable Connectivity Showcase,” to be held in Brussels on May 26-27, 2025. This dialogue aims to advance cooperation in higher education, TVET, and research, strengthening the foundation for regional integration and cross-regional collaboration.
Another critical discussion at the ASEAN Policy Forum revolved around the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. With a generational divide in AI adaptation, the forum explored how flexible policies, teacher training, and innovative learning models could bridge this gap. As one YSBEA representative pointed out, standardised training alone is not enough—education systems must become more dynamic to keep pace with technological advancements.
With only 11% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on track to be achieved by 2030, ensuring equitable access to quality higher education, digital transformation, and the green transition is more important than ever. Through strengthened EU-ASEAN cooperation, increased mobility, and public-private partnerships, we can build a resilient education system that prepares young people for an ever-evolving world.
As we continue the dialogue on inclusive higher education at the upcoming EU-ASEAN Policy Dialogue, let’s reaffirm our commitment to lifelong learning and building a brighter future for all.
