Título de Bachiller/Título de Educación Media

  • Comparable to: a HAVO diploma (NLQF 4/EQF 4).
  • Duration of schooling: 5 years.
  • Type of education: general secondary education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to higher education.

Título de Técnico Medio/Título de Bachiller Técnico

  • Comparable to: a HAVO diploma with vocational subjects (NLQF 4/EQF 4).
  • Duration of schooling: 6 years.
  • Type of education: general and vocational secondary education.
  • Purpose of the diploma: access to the labour market and admission to higher education.

Título de Bachiller en Ciencias/Título de Bachiller en Humanidades (before 2009)

  • Comparable to: a HAVO diploma (NLQF 4/EQF 4).
  • Duration of schooling: 5 years.
  • Type of education: general secondary education.
  • Purpose of the diploma: admission to higher education.

Título de Técnico Superior Universitario

  • Comparable to: 2-3 years of HBO (NLQF 5-6/EQF 5-6).
  • Duration of schooling: mostly 3 years.
  • Type of education: higher professional education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to the labour market and continuation of higher education (pregrado), also based on exemptions (usually the first 3 years, if it is a similar type of programme).

Título de Técnico Superior Especialista (+ specialisation)

  • Comparable to: at least 2-3 years of HBO (NLQF 5-6/EQF 5-6).
  • Duration of schooling: unknown.
  • Type of education: higher professional education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to the labour market and continuation of higher education (pregrado), also based on the previously obtained certificate.

Licenciado/Título Professional (Ingeniero, Abogado etc)

  • Comparable to: an HBO or a WO bachelor’s degree (NLQF 6/EQF 6).
  • Duration of schooling: 4-6 years.
  • Type of education: professional or research-oriented.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to the labour market and continuation of higher education (posgrado: maestría, especialización).

Especialista (+ specialisation)

  • Comparable to: at least an HBO or a WO bachelor’s degree (NLQF 6/EQF 6).
  • Duration of schooling: mostly 3 semesters.
  • Type of education: professional or research-oriented.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to the labour market and continuation of higher education, also based on the previously obtained certificate.

Maestrías/Título de Magíster

  • Comparable to: an HBO or a WO master’s degree (NLQF 7/EQF 7).
  • Duration of schooling: 1-2 years.
  • Type of education: professional or research-oriented.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to the labour market and Doctorados (PhD).
