Vocational education in Algeria
Vocational education (enseignement professionnel) is a separate education sector in Algeria. It consists of 2 phases that students can complete at an Institut d’Enseignement Professionnel (IEP). Students can obtain a diploma after each phase. Since 2017, these diplomas are:
Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel (BEP)
- : 3 years.
- Content: a combination of theory and practice, students do an internship. Students choose one of the following clusters:
- agriculture and food industry (agriculture et agri-food industry);
- computer and digital media (informatique et médias-numériques)
- construction and public works (bâtiment et travaux publics);
- electricity-electronic-energy (électricité-électronique-energétique);
- hospitality, tourism and catering (hôtellerie, tourisme et restauration);
- mechanical and metal construction (construction mécanique et métallique);
- mechanical vehicles and agricultural machines (mécanique matériel roulant et équipement agricole).
All these clusters have different specialisations. Students must choose 1 specialisation.
- Admission requirements: the Brevet d’Enseignement Moyen (BEM).
- Diploma: Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel (BEP)/شهادة التعليم المهني. Please note: before 2017 this diploma was called Diplôme d’Enseignement Professionnel du 2ème degré (DEP2).
Duration
The official length of the full-time programme (not part-time) without study delay.
We compare a Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel (BEP) to an diploma level 3 or 4. This depends on the content of the study programme.
MBO
Secondary vocational education (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs, MBO). MBO prepares pupils for the professional practice or further study. This type of education follows on from VMBO; its duration will depend on the chosen qualification. MBO comprises 4 levels (I-IV). Read more on the website of SBB.
Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel Supérieur (BEPS)
After the Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel (BEP) students can continue studying for the Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel Supérieur (BEPS). This is the 2nd phase of vocational education (enseignement professionnel).
- Duration: 2 years.
- Content: a combination of theory, practical training and an internship. Students continue with their BEP cluster. They choose a specialisation again. They can choose from more than 50 specialisations.
- Admission requirements: a Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel (BEP). Please note: before 2017 this diploma was called Diplôme d’Enseignement Professionnel du 2ème degré (DEP2).
- Diploma: Brevet d’Enseignement Professionnel Supérieur (BEPS)/شهادة التعليم المهني العالي

HBO
Higher professional education (hoger beroepsonderwijs, HBO). Dutch higher education distinguishes between research-oriented higher education (wetenschappelijk onderwijs, WO) and higher professional education (hoger beroepsonderwijs, HBO). HBO is more oriented towards professions in specific areas than WO, and has traditionally been offered at universities of applied sciences (hogescholen).
