Why pursue a bachelor's degree in the Netherlands?

The Netherlands is a popular destination for international bachelor’s students. In this report, Nuffic investigates the reasons behind students’ choice of a study country, the concerns involved in their choice, and their experiences in the Netherlands.

Key findings of the report on reasons for choosing a bachelor in the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a popular destination for international students, the majority of whom pursue a bachelor’s programme. In this study, Nuffic maps out the process through which international bachelor’s students make their choice to study in the Netherlands. We also examine the extent to which their expectations matched their actual experiences. This is a mixed-methods study. The analyses are based on interviews with students and experts and on a questionnaire completed by 302 students.

The path to studying in the Netherlands: a multifaceted decision-making process
The choice to study in the Netherlands is the result of a multifaceted, complex and personal decision-making process. Family appears to be an important factor in this: parents and other family members influence choices based on their own expectations and preferences. External circumstances also play a role, with the Netherlands having become a more attractive option following Brexit.

English language a decisive factor in choosing the Netherlands
The widespread use of English, both in higher education and in everyday life, was the main reason for international bachelor’s students to come and study in the Netherlands. In hindsight, however, some students felt that they had underestimated the importance of Dutch language skills for social integration and finding (part-time) work.

An attractive balance between quality and affordability
International undergraduate students were also drawn by the perception that the Netherlands combines a high quality of life and high-quality education with relatively affordable tuition fees.

Housing shortage as the biggest concern when choosing the Netherlands, followed by financial considerations
More than 7 in 10 respondents cited the housing shortage as a major concern during their decision-making process for the Netherlands as study destination.

International students’ experiences were predominantly positive, but with structural challenges
Positive aspects mainly concerned the quality of education, quality of life, safety and the international environment. At the same time, a number of structural challenges emerged clearly, such as the higher cost of living.
