Dutch degree students abroad

Almost 2 in every 100 students from the Netherlands studied abroad for a full degree programme in 2021. Belgium, the UK, Germany, and the USA were the most popular destinations that year.

Summary

  • 18,459 Dutch students pursued a bachelor’s or master’s degree abroad in 2021, down from 19,448 in 2020 (-5%). The decrease in outbound degree mobility may in part by explained by the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020-22, which significantly disrupted higher education and international travel.
  • In 2021 there were Dutch degree students registered in 103 foreign countries, up from 101 in 2020 (countries with fewer than 10 students are not shown in the dashboard).

Please note that data for Germany and South Africa are only available from 2013 onwards. In addition, the 2018 data for Belgium are incomplete.
