Grades and study results
Secondary education study results
There are different grading scales in upper secondary education. The General Secondary Education Certificate has a different grading system for each specialisation (section):
- Literary
- Scientific
Students pass their exams with a minimum number of points. The minimum and maximum number of points they can obtain is stated on the diploma, the General Secondary Education Certificate.
The table below shows the minimum and maximum number of points per specialisation that students can obtain in a certain school year.
Specialisation | Up to school year 2009-2010 | School year 2009-2010 up to now |
---|---|---|
Literary |
minimum: 102 points maximum: 240 points |
minimum: 118 points maximum: 280 points |
Scientific |
minimum: 104 points maximum: 260 points |
minimum: 116 points maximum: 290 points |
Technical schools use the same system for the Vocational Secondary Education Certificate. This certificate also states the minimum and maximum number of points that students can obtain in that school year.
Checking secondary education study results
You can check the study results of students in secondary education on the website of the Ministry of Education. Only the results from 2014 onwards are online.
Secondary education documents
The following documents allow students to prove that they have completed Syrian general upper secondary education:
- the General Secondary Education Certificate in Arabic; and
- a translation of the diploma.
Please note: the Ministry of Education must be mentioned on the diploma. The Education Directorate of the region is always mentioned as well. If students apply for a degree programme in the Netherlands, they must show a translation of their diploma.
Secondary vocational education study results
In Syrian secondary vocational education, intermediate institutes assess study results with percentages, just like in higher education. Students must have obtained at least 50% to pass an exam.
Result | Description | Meaning |

85-100% | إمتياز | excellent |
75-84 % | جيد جداً | very good |
65-74 % | جيد | good |

0-49% | راسب | fail |
Secondary vocational education documents
Students can prove that they have completed a secondary vocational education programme by showing:
- a diploma or graduation certificate from the higher education institution; and
- a list of grades.
Please note: in order to apply for a Dutch degree programme, a student must provide a translation of both documents. In Syrian secondary vocational education, diplomas and lists of grades are usually issued in Arabic.
