Secondary vocational education in Bangladesh
There are many types of study programmes in Bangladeshi secondary vocational education. The study programmes vary in terms of their admission requirements, , content and . You need information about this in order to determine the level of a diploma.
The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) makes the general policy for secondary vocational education. The Bangladesh Technical Education Board (BTEB) is responsible for the exams and checks the educational institutions. As a result, students receive their diploma from the BTEB. Below, we describe diplomas we often see.
Duration
The official length of the full-time programme (not part-time) without study delay.
Transfer entitlement
The possibility to continue on to an advanced programme, in some cases with exemptions for several subjects or a certain period.
Higher Secondary Certificate (Business Management)
- Duration: 2 years (grade XI – grade XII).
- Content: theoretical and practical subjects for a business profession (specialisation/trade), such as programmer, finance assistant, bank employee, entrepreneur or secretary. Students take an internship (industrial training).
- Admission requirements: a Secondary School Certificate. Other diplomas may also be enough for admission.
- Function of the diploma: work or access to further secondary vocational education. Sometimes students get access to a bachelor’s programme when their subjects are related to the field of study of the bachelor’s programme.
- Diploma: Higher Secondary Certificate (Business Management) from the BTEB.

MBO
Secondary vocational education (middelbaar beroepsonderwijs, MBO). MBO prepares pupils for the professional practice or further study. This type of education follows on from VMBO; its duration will depend on the chosen qualification. MBO comprises 4 levels (I-IV). Read more on the website of SBB.
Higher Secondary Certificate (Vocational)
- Duration: 2 years (grade XI- grade XII).
- Content: theoretical and practical subjects for a practical profession (trade). Various professions are possible, such as fish farmer (fish culture and breeding) or woodworker (wood working and cabinet design).
- Admission requirements: a Secondary School Certificate (Vocational).
- Function of the diploma: work or access to further secondary vocational education. Sometimes students get access to a bachelor’s programme when their subjects are related to the field of study of the bachelor’s programme.
- Diploma: Higher Secondary Certificate (Vocational) from the BTEB.
We compare a Higher Secondary Certificate (Vocational) to an MBO diploma level 3 or 4. This depends on the content of the study programme.

Diploma in Engineering
- Duration: 4 years.
- Content: students take subjects for a technical specialisation, such as civil or electrical engineering. They also gain work experience during their studies (industrial training).
- Admission requirements: a Secondary School Certificate.
- Function of the diploma: work. Sometimes, access to a bachelor’s programme in a related field of study is possible.
- Diploma: Diploma in Engineering.
