Summary

  • Since 2020, Belgium, the UK, Germany have been the three most popular destinations for Dutch bachelor’s and master’s students pursuing a degree abroad.
  • For the last 4 years, the USA and Türkiye have been the only top-10 destination countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA). They are now joined by the UK, following the completion of Brexit in January 2021.
  • Most countries in the top 10 hosted fewer Dutch degree students in 2021 than in 2020. The number of Dutch students enrolled in the USA decreased by the largest percentage (-11%). This may in part be due to travel restrictions in place during the Covid-19 pandemic. A notable exception is Türkiye, which attracted 13% more Dutch degree students in 2021 compared to the previous year.

Please note that data for Germany and South Africa are only available from 2013 onwards. In addition, the 2018 data for Belgium are incomplete.
