Summary

  • There were 1,298 more new international enrolments in 2023-24 compared to the previous academic year, an increase of 2.6%.
  • Universities of applied sciences (UAS) saw an overall increase in new international enrolments relative to the previous year (13,042, +649), with the largest growth at master’s level.
  • New international enrolments on research university bachelor’s programmes were down slightly on the previous year (20,620, -10), ending almost two decades of continuous growth. Meanwhile, RU master’s programmes received more new international students than the year before (18,237, +659).
  • 2023-24 saw the sharpest year-on-year increase to date in the number of newly-enrolled Chinese degree students (+23%). There were 3,164 new students from China in 2023-24, accounting for 6.1% of all new international enrolments in the Netherlands.
