Countries of origin
Germany remains by far the most important country of origin, followed by Italy (2nd), China (3rd), Belgium (4th) and Bulgaria (5th). The United Kingdom has lost its place in the top 5.
Fields of study
Most international degree students study economics & business. Fine arts & liberal arts and sciences have the highest relative shares of international students enrolled.
Regions and universities
Maastricht University enrolls the most international degree students, followed by the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen.
In 2019 – 2020, 14.821 international degree students from countries with a Neso office were enrolled in the Netherlands.
Global mobility streams
Over 4.5 million degree students studied abroad in 2016. The US, the UK and other English-speaking countries are the most popular destinations for international degree students.
