Common diplomas of Spain

Título de Técnico

  • Dutch comparison: MBO qualification level 1-4 diploma (NLQF* 1-4/EQF** 1-4).
  • Duration of schooling: varies.
  • Type of education: secondary vocational education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to upper general secondary education, or to postsecondary education (formación superior no universitaria), upon successful completion of entrance examinations.

Título de Técnico Superior

  • Dutch comparison: at least MBO qualification level 4 diploma (NLQF 4/EQF 4).
  • Duration of schooling: 2 years.
  • Type of education: post-secondary education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to higher education.

Título de Bachiller

  • Dutch comparison: at least HAVO diploma (NLQF 4/EQF 4).
  • Duration of schooling: 2 years (before the introduction of the bachelor’s-master’s degree structure it was 3 years).
  • Type of education: upper general secondary education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to higher education, upon successful completion of entrance examinations.

Diplomado/Arquitecto Técnico/Ingeniero Técnico/Título de Maestro

  • Dutch comparison: HBO bachelor’s degree (NLQF 6/EQF 6).
  • Duration of schooling: 3 years.
  • Type of education: higher professional education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to further study of the second cycle in higher education (Licenciado/Ingeniero/Arquitecto), possibly upon completion of a transition programme.

Título Superior de Música/de Danza/en Arte Dramático

  • Dutch comparison: HBO bachelor’s degree (art education) (NLQF 6/EQF 6).
  • Duration of schooling: 4 to 5 years.
  • Type of education: higher art education.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to further study of the second cycle within higher education.

Título de Graduado

  • Dutch comparison: HBO or WO bachelor’s degree (NLQF 6/EQF 6).
  • Duration of schooling: 4 years.
  • Type of education: professional or research oriented.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to further study of the second cycle in higher education.

Máster Universitario

  • Dutch comparison: HBO or WO master’s degree (NLQF 7/EQF 7).
  • Duration of schooling: 1 to 2 years.
  • Type of education: professional or research oriented.
  • Purpose of diploma: access to doctorate programmes.

Licenciado/Ingeniero/Arquitecto
