Nuffic Southern Africa
Activities
Nuffic Southern Africa focuses on the following activities:
- promoting Dutch higher education and increasing student and staff mobility between Southern Africa and the Netherlands;
- supporting students from the Netherlands to come to Southern Africa for study, research and internships;
- intensifying ties with alumni networks in Southern Africa;
- initiating and coordinating partnerships, like the NRF-Nuffic PhD programme and Living Labs;
- capacity building: implementation of the Orange Knowledge Programme in the region.
Our Nuffic Southern Africa office promotes and provides information on more than 2,100 study programmes taught in English in the Netherlands. We also initiate and facilitate institutional cooperation between Southern African and Dutch universities and work together with Southern African partners on capacity development through the Orange Knowledge Programme.
Orange Knowledge Programme
The Orange Knowledge Programme aims to contribute to a society's sustainable and inclusive development. The programme offers scholarships, training and institutional partnerships between education institutions in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and higher education.
There are various instruments, including scholarships, Tailor-Made Training and institutional collaboration projects. Which instruments are available in each Orange Knowledge Programme country varies.

NRF-Nuffic Programme
Southern Africa aspires to produce more doctoral graduates to increase its global competitiveness, high-level research skills and knowledge production. One way to achieve this is by creating international partnerships and networks between scientists and research institutions, with a focus on training doctoral students.
Next generation researchers
The National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa has a mandate to promote and support research through funding, human capacity development and the provision of the necessary research infrastructure. In order to realise this mandate, the NRF has made a substantial commitment and investment towards supporting the next generation of researchers. This will intensify and strengthen African and global networks.
NRF-Nuffic partnership
Scientific cooperation between South Africa and the Netherlands forms a cornerstone of the longstanding bilateral relations between the two countries. Over the last 5 years the NRF-Nuffic doctoral programme (a doctorate study aboard programme) has contributed to the next generation of scholars in South Africa and supported strong relations between South Africa and the Netherlands in science and education cooperation. The programme builds on previous doctoral training initiatives including SANPAD and the Desmond Tutu programme. Since the inception of the programme 46 grants have been made for South African PhD candidates to enroll for a full time (4 year) or joint PhD with Dutch knowledge institutions. In addition to providing these individual grants, the programme has also strengthened bilateral ties between individual knowledge institutions in South Africa and the Netherlands resulting in various new bilateral agreements. Nine Dutch institutions1 and 12 South African universities are actively involved in hosting candidates.
