European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
The EU introduced this standardised system for measuring study load as a way to facilitate international mobility. The Netherlands adopted ECTS officially in 2002. One ECTS credit represents 28 hours of full-time study, and 60 credits represent one year.
Over time the term 'accumulation' was added: European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, but because 'ECTS' was already widely used, the abbreviation was not changed.
