The Nuffic Glossary is a list with explanations of terms used in Dutch education.
Document certifying that a student has completed one module or component of a study programme. A diploma is awarded once the student has obtained all prescribed certificates.
In English, it is not always necessary to translate the deel-component of this term explicitly, as it may be sufficient in the context to say that a certificate is awarded on completion of each module, and that (for example) all three certificates must be obtained before the final diploma can be awarded.
If it is necessary to be explicit, 'module certificate', 'modular certificate' and 'certificate of completion' are useful translations. Linguistic purists may argue that a 'modular certificate' is a certificate earned for a number of modules rather than for a single module. This term should therefore be used with the necessary circumspection. In common with the Dutch term, 'certificate of completion' may imply that the certificate has no other value than being a step on the way to earning a diploma.
