After the elections on July 1st, Mexico has a new president-elect: Andrés Manuel López Obrador (commonly referred to as ‘AMLO’) of the leftist Morena party. As of 1 December 2018, he will be President of Mexico for the next six years.


Croats no longer require a work permit

As of 1 July 2018, Croats will have the same rights as all other EU citizens to work in the Netherlands. For regular jobs, work placements and jobs on the side, a work permit will no longer be required. In addition, Croats will be free to establish themselves as a self-employed person (zelfstandige) from that date on.


First meeting Orange Knowledge Advisory Board

On Monday 2 July 2018, the Orange Knowledge Advisory Board held its first meeting at Nuffic in The Hague. The board, consisting of seven Dutch and international members from the educational and development field, is chaired by Ms Jet Bussemaker, former Netherlands' Minister of Education, Science and Culture.

Nuffic is optimistic about the government’s vision on internationalisation of education. The letter Minister van Engelshoven submitted to Parliament today showed a nuanced stance on internationalisation in senior secondary vocational education and training (VET) and higher education. Nuffic is eager to contribute to the realisation of the Minister’s objectives.


International students may now work more hours

International students from outside Europe are now allowed to work 16 hours per week in addition to their studies. The previous standard was 10 hours per week. The possibilities for taking part in an internship after graduation have been expanded as well.

Cheaper residence permits for international students

With effect from 3 May, the fees for several residence permit types – including those covering study, internships and the orientation year – will be significantly reduced. It will also be cheaper for companies to hire knowledge migrants. This has been decided by the Dutch government.


International student population increasingly diverse

The international student population in the Netherlands is becoming increasingly diverse and now includes 162 nationalities. Study programmes in which foreign students enrol at Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences are highly varied as well. These findings derive from an analysis by Nuffic based on student mobility figures from the 2017-2018 academic year.

Automatic recognition: a necessity

By 2020, all countries within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) will be required to automatically recognize each other's bachelor's and master's degrees. Nuffic, together with partners from other European recognition centers, has investigated how this can be realised. The policy paper is now available.


Work permit no longer required for voluntary work

International students and scientific researchers from outside the European Union wishing to do voluntary work in the Netherlands, no longer need a work permit (TWV) to do so. Instead, the so-called Volunteer Declaration (Vrijwilligersverklaring) is now sufficient.

In 2017, Nuffic turned 65! The Netherlands Commission for Unesco turned 70 and we celebrated the 30th anniversary of Erasmus+. Perhaps we met during our annual conference, at the debate on internationalisation prior to the elections, or at the 8th National CLIL Conference. The event attracted more than 800 students, teachers, counsellors and other visitors.


South Africa and the Netherlands sustain cooperation in vocational education

South Africa and the Netherlands have worked together intensively on improving technical and vocational education and training sector (TVET) since 2006. A responsive TVET is essential to offer youth job opportunities and foster economic growth. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has decided to take the next step in the cooperation by further investing in a system that currently supports more than 8,000 lecturers at public TVET colleges in South Africa.
