Call for interest: doctoral training programme with South Africa

Publication date: Sep 12, 2017 05:50 AM

Nuffic and the National Research Foundation of South Africa (NRF) signed last May a doctoral training agreement. We are currently making an inventory of interest among Dutch universities.

The Memorandum of Agreement will enable at least 50 South African students to study towards a PhD in the Netherlands between 2018 and 2022. Based on further discussions with the NRF and in the run up to implementation of the programme, we would now like to receive expressions of interest from Dutch universities as well as further input on the design of the programme.

For this purpose, we have set-up a response form. If interested in this programme please fill out the response form before 25 September 2017.

The programme principles are as follows:

  • NRF will provide scholarships for students from South Africa to study in the Netherlands. The scholarship will cover Subsistence allowance, Insurance, International travel, and cost for visa, but not tuition fee.
  • Participating Dutch universities are expected to host the PhD candidates from South Africa and provide research supervision and facilities.
  • Participating Dutch universities will not charge tuition fees to the candidates or NRF.
  • Two modalities are being considered: 1) full PhD trajectory in the Netherlands, and 2) joint degrees with joint supervision and PhD candidates dividing their time/presence between the Dutch and South African institution.

Interested institutions will be kept informed of the further implementation of the programme.
