13 new Orange Knowledge projects

In the first round of calls for institutional collaboration projects of the Orange Knowledge Programme, 13 projects in 9 countries were awarded with a total budget of 14 million euros.

The now concluded September’s 2018 calls were eligible for 11 of the ‘full programme countries’ of the Orange Knowledge Programme.

The country-specific calls on selected priority themes like Food & Nutrition Security, and Security and Rule of Law are designed to stimulate knowledge institutes to build long-term partnerships. These partnerships should involve various stakeholders in higher education and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the country itself and in the Netherlands.

In some cases, local government, NGO's and\or private sector are also involved, and in a number of projects a percentage of co-funding is integrated. Key in all awarded projects is knowledge exchange, capacity development, the match with job markets’ demands and inclusion.

The Orange Knowledge Programme provides funding for e.g. curricula development and\or extension, digitalisation and staff development through scholarships for masters, short courses, PhDs, and group trainings.

In the coming months we will publish a series of 20 new calls for institutional collaboration projects in various full programme countries.

Orange Knowledge priority themes. 4 examples:

On Security and Rule of Law the EIS ‘End Impunity of Sexual and Gender Based Violence’ (SGBV) project in Uganda has been selected. The Judicial Training Institute in Uganda will collaborate with Maastricht School of Management and the Regional Training Facility of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region. The consortium will work together to strengthen institutional and training capacity of crucial training institutions for police and judiciary officers. They will be equipped with the capacity to better address cases of SGBV in order to prosecute perpetrators and treat SGBV survivors with the sensitivity they deserve.

On Water management, the long-term collaboration of the Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment and Thuy Loi University and Dutch education institutes TU Delft and ITC Twente was selected to provide sound management of dynamic and complex water systems in the Mekong and Red River deltas. The project will equip water professionals of the participating partners with knowledge and practical skills in technical, social, governance and financial issues in integrated water management. It will also work on tackling the rapid decline of male students in water management at universities. Also involved in the project are Dutch and Vietnamese private and public sector partners such as Deltares, Royal Haskoning/DHV, VINWater, Rijkswaterstaat, World Water Net and CDR.

On Food & Nutrition Security, the partnership between the Federal TVET Institute (FTI) in Ethiopia and Maastricht School of Management (MSM) forms a good example. It will improve the quality and employability of agricultural technical vocational education and training (ATVET) for both the dairy and horticulture sector. MSM plays a role at improving the inclusiveness of the project. It will contextualize a roadmap of gender equality and women empowerment and will introduce a Female Talent Programme, offering sets of practical instruments and references to be used by professionals working on strengthening female talent in education institutions. Furthermore, female entrepreneurship will get explicit attention in the entrepreneurship activities.

On Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights the project focused on the Bangladesh garment-sector that was awarded of the partnership between the Directorate General of Family Planning of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). Young women working in this sector often face problems relating to gender inequality and taboos around sexuality. The project looks at daily circumstances of workers, considers the effects of programme interventions and recognises that sexuality, gender, and ethnic identity shape SRH practices. To create enabling conditions for garment workers to exercise their SRHR, the project will amongst others intervene by providing tailor-made innovative SRHR education to future workers.
