Internationalisation at home

Intercultural competencies are not a luxury - they are a necessity. But not every student can go abroad. For this reason, many education institutions use 'Internationalisation at Home'. This is a range of activities that allow the students to gain international experience without leaving the country.

Policies on Internationalisation at Home

We have studied the policies of Dutch higher education institutions to advance internationalisation at their institution.

Nearly all institutions have a central internationalisation policy. These policies put a great emphasis on international and intercutural competencies. They do not consider Internationalisation at Home to be an alternative, but rather an addition to a stay abroad.

They do pay relatively little attention to international and intercultural competencies of their lecturers and staff. Read the English summary of our research report:

Internationalsation at Home in practice

What exactly do higher education institutions do with regard to internationalisation in the home country? We have studied that too.

Many institutions:

  • offer parts of the study programmes in English or another foreign language;
  • incorporate international subjects into their curriculum;
  • let their students participate in international projects.

Generally speaking, institutions could do more with regard to Internationalisation at Home. As an example, they could make more use of interships at international organisations. Or they could engage more in joint curiculum development. Virtual mobility also offers great opportunities. Read the Engelish summary of our research report:
