Description

Global citizenship is a key concept within the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and has become a central focus of internationalisation efforts in post-secondary education. Internationalisation, whether through physical mobility or at-home initiatives such as international classrooms and virtual exchanges, has the potential to nurture global citizenship by exposing students to diverse perspectives and encouraging them to critically reflect on their own worldviews. However, its impact is neither guaranteed nor uniform.

Rather than assuming its effectiveness, this webinar invites a critical examination of what current research and practice reveal about the conditions under which international experiences meaningfully contribute to students’ development. What makes internationalisation transformative, and when does it fall short? What pedagogical and institutional strategies are needed to foster genuine intercultural and international experience?

During this webinar, Dr Ingrid Van Rompay-Bartels will introduce the concept of Global Citizenship Education (GCED). She will also explain how HAN University of Applied Sciences is implementing this concept in its educational practice.

Using a concrete example, the session will encourage dialogue and reflection on how, when intentionally designed and critically supported, international experience can help cultivate the mindset and skills needed for the next generation of global citizens.
