Project description
This NICHE project will address the core functions of TIE, involving both curriculum review and development, improved teacher training with a focus on life skills, gender and entrepreneurship. The project is part of a wider programme supporting private sector development in Tanzania.
TIE's mandate is to:
- develop, review and evaluate school curricula;
- conduct pre-service and in-service teacher training programmes;
- provide quality assurance of educational materials and equipment used in schools and teacher training colleges;
- conduct examinations and issue certificates, diplomas and other awards;
- provide professional advice to achieving high standards and competence in teaching and learning and curriculum reform.
Tanzania has a rapidly growing proportion of young people. The formal sector is unable to create enough jobs to meet this growth, even in times of strong economic growth. Most young Tanzanians survive by generating income in the informal sector, particularly in urban areas.
The majority of indigenous private businesses in Tanzania are informal. They are not doing very well in terms of growth and competitiveness. This is particularly the case among women-owned businesses. In order to tackle youth unemployment entrepreneurship and life skills should be integrated into all levels of education, starting at primary school.
