Project description
Agriculture plays an important role in Rwandan culture and history. It is the backbone of the economy employing over 85% of the working population and dominates GDP. The modernisation of agriculture and animal husbandry is one of the pillars of Vision 2020, which promotes the transformation of agriculture into a productive, high-value, market-oriented sector, with the following characteristics:
-
an intensified use of inputs and modern techniques in crop production and animal husbandry;
-
a prudent use of land and water;
-
agricultural commercialisation and stream-lined marketing channels;
-
stronger research capacity and extension services;
-
strong linkages to other sectors;
-
a reform of institutional structures to facilitate a rapid agricultural transformation.
In this context, ISAE, a public institution established in 1989 in Busogo in the Northern Province with the mission to train agricultural professionals at advanced level, has the potential to contribute significantly to rural economy transformation and development and the implementation of government policies. In order to become a regional centre of excellence in teaching, research and community service, ISAE has to accomplish two missions:
- train skilled engineers in the domains of agriculture and livestock;
- contribute to the poverty alleviation programme of the government and to food security through research and technology transfer.
Under the NPT programme, ISAE has improved its educational offer, introduced Competence-Based Learning and developed links with the professional sector. Within the limits of the allocated budget, this project aims to consolidate the abovementioned achievements by:
-
strengthening the governance and management capacity of ISAE;
-
further improving the quality and relevance of ISAE’s educational offer, by strengthening the capacity of its academic staff and its applied research competence;
- improving student employability and further developing industrial linkages and professional outreach.
