Below is a schematic overview of the objectives and outcomes of NICHE projects focusing on water in Bangladesh. This overview is based on the Plan of Implementation which is integral part of the Programme Outline.
Objectives
- To support the selected institutions to provide quality education to a higher number of participants in the field of integrated water resources management and land use management.
- To support the leadership of Higher Education Institutions to acquire knowledge and skills to properly manage their institutions.
- To foster knowledge dissemination and transfer among various institutions in the water and land management sector.
- To improve, adapt and develop new curricula, research, knowledge and skills according to the needs and to new developments in the field.
- To promote interdisciplinary curricula among the various national water and land management institutions.
- To enhance the organizational capacities of the selected institutions in order to improve their competitiveness and performance in the sector.
- To strengthen and expand the network of training providers (e.g. universities, knowledge providers, research centres) in the water sector and water institutes.
Benchmark of the present status
- Courses are outdated and technical knowledge of students is not adapted to what is needed in the field.
- Courses are not integrated with other topics important for the water sector as agriculture, environment, social skills etcetera.
- Courses are 'old fashioned' and do not improve students' critical analytic skills and field knowledge.
- There is no good network available.
Medium Term Outcomes – 4 years
- Staff have enhanced their capacity to develop and implement new educational and research programmes.
- Leadership of the Higher Education Institutions have developed relevant skills in a range of relevant topics to implement new curricula.
- Managers at the selected institutions have increased their capacity to better manage their institutions.
- The quality of the courses has improved and is in line with the needs in the field.
Longer Term Outcomes – 8 years
- The leadership of the selected institutions are driving forces behind ongoing adaptations and organizational improvements, resulting in more attractive Higher Education Institutions.
- The selected institutions are seen as meaningful partners in the water sector.
- Scientific knowledge is consolidated and integrated, and provides innovative solutions in the actual needs due to climate change.
- The organizational culture is transformed towards network/alliances and interdisciplinary manner of cooperation among the universities.
- The Bangladeshis and the Dutch have intensified relationships and cooperation in higher education and research in the field, and have built strong knowledge networks in the area of water and land use management and Climate Change.
