After you have submitted your application it will be assessed. The outcome of the selection will become available about 16 weeks after the fellowship application deadline. This page describes the selection procedure including a timeframe to help you follow the selection process.

Selection procedure for master's degree programmes and short courses

Both the Dutch institution and the Netherlands embassy will assess your fellowship application. The Dutch institutions will focus on your academic qualities. The Netherlands embassy will look at the relevance of your application for the development of your employing organisation and home country.

If applicable, your application also needs to comply with country-specific criteria. Subsequently, we make a ranking of all eligible applications giving priority to applications from female candidates. We ensure that half of the available budget for fellowships is allocated to applications from candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa.
 

Selection procedure for PhD studies

Both Nuffic and the Netherlands embassy will assess your application based on the relevance of the proposed research for your employing organisation and home country. We give priority to applications that:

  • propose that the research project be co-supervised by an institution in an NFP country;
  • have a proven link with other activities financed by the NFP or other Dutch government-funded activities or a proven link or work agreement in the research area between the employing organization and the Dutch institution;
  • have been submitted by female candidates;
  • have been submitted by candidates from Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • focus on gender.

Timeframe

The selection procedure has a very strict timeframe. When the selection approaches you have to respond quickly to a possible availability request. Carefully examine the timeframe below.

X Fellowship application deadline
X + 3 weeks Registration of admission decision
X + 7 weeks Decision on eligibility
X + 10-16 weeks If requested, you must confirm your availability

X stands for the fellowship application deadline. X + indicates the number of weeks after the fellowship application deadline when a certain decision is taken in the selection procedure.

For example: seven weeks after the fellowship application deadline latest you can check in SOL if your application is considered eligible or not.
 

Monitor the selection process

If you have applied through SOL you can keep track of your application in SOL. During the selection process your application will change status. You will be notified by email if the status of your application changes.

After the selection

You will be informed about the outcome of the selection by mail or email The outcome of the selection will also be visible in SOL. The selection is final. There is no list of reserve candidates.

If your application is successful the Dutch institution will contact you by mail or email to make all necessary (logistical) arrangements for your fellowship.

We pay your fellowship to the Dutch institution, as described in the Rules and Regulations. The institution will manage your fellowship and make payments to you for the duration of your fellowship.
