Documents for application
24 Aug 2010
This page contains information on the documents needed to support your application for a provisional residence permit.
In an advisory procedure your host institution will send all the paperwork to the Dutch immigration office (IND). It is up to the host institution to complete an application form and assemble all the required documents. However, your host will need your help to collect these documents.
The required documents may include:
- a copy of your passport;
- documents to confirm that you are or will be enrolled as a student, or that you are going to do an internship;
- (for interns:) a work permit if required. Your employer or host is responsible for applying for this;
- (for Chinese students:) a Nuffic certificate, necessary to follow a study programme which is taught in English;
- proof of financial means (see below). Your funding must be equal to at least the minimum monthly amounts set by the IND. These minimum monthly amounts are not necessarily the same for each purpose of stay and are subject to change; they are reviewed twice a year. For the current amounts, check the IND website or ask your host institution.
If you are asked to provide documents, please bear in mind that the IND only accepts documents written in Dutch, English, German or French. Documents in other languages must be accompanied by an official translation.
Proof of financial means
This money can come from any or all of the sources listed below. The proof required in each case is indicated:
- If you receive a student grant: a document from the body that gives you your grant, which states the amount of the grant and its duration;
- If you are a self-supporting student: a statement with your name on it from a Dutch bank or an internationally-known bank which shows that there is enough money in your account to cover your costs in the Netherlands;
- If someone else is sponsoring you (e.g. your parents): a written statement by your sponsor which states the amount and the duration of the sponsorship, plus proof that your sponsor has sufficient funds;
- If you are starting an internship: a copy of the contract with the Dutch organization where you will do your internship, which states the payment agreement.
Quite often it is possible to transfer the full amount necessary to the account of your host. The host institution will then include a copy of its bank statement with details of your payment in the application papers it sends to the IND.
