Documents for application
13 Apr 2010
This page contains information on the documents needed to support your application for a residence permit.
You will be granted a residence permit only if your application meets certain criteria. Your application will be assessed on the basis of these criteria, using the documents provided. If you have previously been issued a provisional residence permit (MVV), you need not resubmit documents that were already submitted for the MVV procedure.
Criteria for assessment
You will be granted a residence permit only if:
- you have a provisional residence permit issued for the same purpose of stay (if required, based on your nationality;
- you have a valid passport;
- you have sufficient financial means;
- you are not a danger to public order or national security in the Netherlands;
- the required fees are paid;
- you have a letter or other document from your Dutch host institution stating that you are or will be enrolled as a student, or that you are going to do an internship;
- (for interns): you have a copy of the application for a work permit, if applicable;
- (for Chinese students): you have a Nuffic Neso certificate, necessary to follow a study programme which is taught in English;
- you are willing to undergo a tuberculosis examination and, if necessary, treatment (this is required for most non-EU/EER nationalities; ask your host institution).
Documents required
Your host institution will send all the paperwork to the Dutch immigration office (IND). It is up to the host institution to assemble all the required documents and complete an application form, which you then need to sign. However, your host will need your help to collect these documents.
The required documents may include:
- a copy of your passport (including a copy of the provisional residence permit, if required);
- documents to confirm that you are or will be enrolled as a student, or that you are going to do an internship;
- a work permit if required (for interns): your employer or host is responsible for applying for this;
- a Nuffic Neso certificate, for Chinese students who want to follow a study programme which is taught in English;
- proof of financial means: your funding must be equal to at least the minimum monthly amounts set by IND. These minimum monthly amounts are not necessarily the same for each purpose of stay and are subject to change: they are reviewed twice a year. Check the IND website for the current amounts or ask your host institution.
If you are asked to provide documents, please bear in mind that the IND only accepts documents written in Dutch, English, German or French. Documents in other languages must be accompanied by an official translation.
Proof of financial means
This money can come from any or all of the sources listed below. The proof document required in each case is indicated:
- If you receive a student grant: a document from the body that gives you your grant, which states the amount of the grant and its duration.
- If you are a self-supporting student: a statement with your name on it from a Dutch bank or an internationally- known bank which shows that there is enough money in your account to cover your costs in the Netherlands.
- If someone else is sponsoring you (e.g. your parents), a written statement by your sponsor, which states the amount and the duration of the sponsorship, plus proof that your sponsor has sufficient funds.
- If you are starting an internship: a copy of the contract with the Dutch organization where you will do your internship, which states the payment agreement.
Quite often it is possible to transfer the full amount necessary to the account of your host. The host institution will then include a copy of its bank statement with details of your payment in the application papers it sends to the IND.
