he Netherlands is sometimes referred to as an 'insurance country', meaning that is possible to buy insurance for almost any kind of mishap. On this page we list a few types of insurance which are useful for you during your stay in the Netherlands. We particularly recommend you take out liability insurance.
Liability insurance
If you cause an accident and someone is injured or if you damage someone's property, you are responsible for paying all the costs caused by the accident. You might, for example, break something in your rented room. On a more serious note, you might also cause a road accident.
In addition, you may be held responsible for damage caused during professional activities. People who work in the health sector, for example, can be sued if something goes wrong.
Accidents such as these can be very expensive. You are therefore strongly urged to take out a good liability insurance policy, which will cover all costs in many cases.
In the Netherlands, damage caused on the job is usually covered by the employer's liability insurance. If you are an intern, you are typically included in the company’s liability insurance, just like their regular employees. To be certain, however, please check with the company or organization you'll be working for.
Repatriation insurance
Repatriation means returning to your home country. If you happen to fall seriously ill, you might prefer to be at home. It would be wise to have an insurance policy covering the costs of repatriation.
Household contents insurance
Household contents insurance covers the contents of your home against loss due to causes such as theft, fire or water damage.
Insurance packages
You might like to buy an insurance package including various types of insurances. This may get you a discount and in case of trouble, you only need to deal with one company.
