Good preparation
06 Dec 2011
If you hold a Dutch diploma and wish to work abroad, it is important to ascertain in advance whether the profession that you wish to practise is freely accessible. Proper preparation is crucial in this regard.
The following services may be of importance to you. In addition, you can also contact the National Contact Point for Professional Recognition (NCP) if you have any questions.
Useful certificates and declarations
- Teaching professions: teaching qualification certificate
Do you have a diploma to which a formal teaching qualification is attached in the Netherlands and do you wish to teach abroad? If so, you can apply for a teaching qualification certificate from the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO). This certificate specifies the subjects for which and the schools in which you are qualified to teach in the Netherlands. Such a certificate is required if you intend to apply for a teaching qualification abroad. Further information is provided on DUO's website. - Professions in the healthcare sector: Letter of good standing
Most countries require a Letter of good standing from the country in which you obtained the diploma. This declaration specifies your profession and the title associated with it that you may use in the Netherlands. It also specifies whether restrictive measures apply. In short, it is a confirmation in English of your listing in the register maintained under the Dutch Individual Healthcare Professions Act (BIG Register). This document is also known as the Declaration of Current Professional Status. Further information is provided on the BIG Register website. - Other regulated professions: NCP declaration
The National Contact Point can issue an NCP declaration for other regulated professions. An NCP declaration states that a diploma obtained in the Netherlands is regulated under Directive 2005/36/EC. View more information about the declaration and the application procedure. - Diploma description
A diploma description is more comprehensive than an NCP declaration. It is a description of a Dutch diploma drawn up in English or Spanish. This provides greater clarity about your education to a future employer, government agency or teaching institute and therefore increases the prospect of a job or study abroad. View more information about the diploma description.
Legalisation
If you go abroad for work or study, it is important that your education-related documents are recognised in the destination country. Many countries require legalised documents as part of an application for recognition.
Dutch education-related documents issued by educational institutions recognised by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) can be legalised by the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO).
Further information is provided on DUO's website.
