Water
23 Sep 2010
Below is an overview of the current status of the water sector in Yemen and donor activities.
The implementation of the National Water Sector Strategy and Investment Program (NWSSIP) started in 2005 and was completed in 2009. The programme provided a common framework for planning, financing, implementation and monitoring.
The overall goal of the NWSSIP, now updated and in the process of being approved, is to improve the Yemeni population’s sustainable and economically efficient use of the nation’s scarce water resources.
Uneven progress
Although considerable progress has been made between 2005 and 2009, this has been unevenly spread across the five sub-sectors:
- water resource management;
- urban water supply and sanitation;
- rural water supply and sanitation;
- Irrigation and watershed management;
- environmental protection;
Donors
The major donors in Yemen’s water sector are the World Bank, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Together, they will finance the implementation of the NWSSIP within the framework of the newly established Water Sector Support Project (WSSP).
In addition to this donor core group, there are other donors including Japan (rural water supply) and a number of international NGOs.
NICHE will ensure that its support to the water sector will be complementary to the initiatives of other donors.
