Agribusiness
15 Jun 2010
In spite of economic development and a high growth rate in industry and services the agriculture sector contributes only around 13% towards Indonesia's GDP, while employing 40% of the country's workforce.
Approximately half of the population lives in rural areas and relies on agricultural incomes. To support its transition to a middle income country Indonesia wishes to further improve and modernize agricultural technology and invest in research and development.
This is necessary to feed a growing population living on increasingly less cultivable land (especially on Java) and to raise productivity.
Focus on sustainability and innovation
Agriculture development in Indonesia is directly related to efforts to reduce poverty. Dutch collaboration with and assistance to Indonesia has therefore traditionally focused on sustainable and innovative entrepreneurship development in agriculture (including horticulture) and fisheries, in support of food quality and food security.
NICHE will complement the ongoing programme by investing in education and training in agriculture business development.
