Objectives
The capacity of post-secondary education and training institutes on Natural Resource Management (NRM), in northern Ghana, to deliver quality, gender-sensitive education and training, or to do relevant research is strengthened.
Benchmark of the present status
- rapid degradation of natural resources and environment causing:
- a 1% reduction of potential economic growth amounting to almost 10% of GDP;
- health expenses (poor sanitation, indoor pollution); - lack of attention for social issues and governance in forestry;
- lack of know-how and technical skills on NRM and climate change;
- lack of relevant research capacities;
- lack of know-how and technical skills on oil;
- reputation of polytechnics doesn’t attract excellent students;
- inadequate gender disaggregated data;
Medium Term outcomes (4 years)
- selected education and training institutes are able to develop, teach and manage the improved education programmes;
- centres of excellence on NRM are created and are functioning effectively;
- selected institutions collaborate effectively with other education, research, policy and private sector stakeholders and relevant civic organisations;
- selected institutions apply mechanisms to adjust curricula and courses to new findings from research;
- polytechnics have improved their reputation and are capable to attract excellent students;
- gender-sensitive projects, including curricula developed;
- gender disaggregated data available;
- gender awareness has been institutionalized in the operations of post-secondary education and training institutes.
Longer Term outcomes (8 years)
- post-secondary NRM education institutes and centres of excellence are capable of organizing and developing training programmes and research for their students in an effective and efficient way.
- post-secondary education and training institutes respond in the planning and implementation of their education and training programmes to demands in the labour market and have become more attractive to new students, employers and/or research clients.
