Gender

19 Aug 2010

NICHE seeks to reduce gender discrepancy in post-secondary education and training systems.

The 2007-2008 UNDP report states that women and men are not equally employed in the development dynamic of Guatemala. The gender employment ratio shows unequal relationships, including employment instability, lower pay and unemployment among women. The percentage of female participation in the labour market is 29%, compared to 90% for men.

In the same manner, the NPT’s evaluation of Guatemala established that, in terms of the incorporation of the gender perspective, the projects do not appear to have taken any action or attained any achievement whatsoever. Consequently, it is recommended that training be provided to mainstream gender in all NICHE projects.

NICHE gender strategy

In line with NICHE's strategy, participating institutions must demonstrate improvements in:

  • gender balance in their workforce;
  • access for women to education and training programmes;
  • reference to gender in their plans.

The NICHE programme will ensure that all project profiles include a gender strategy, which will implementated in all projects. This specific aspect will be monitored and reported in progress reports and in the annual activity plans.

Finally, local consultants involved in the training and follow-up process will pay special attention to gender issues.
