The NICHE identification process in Egypt has resulted in the selection of three sectors: agriculture, water, and women's empowerment. On this page you can read more about the objectives and focus of NICHE in Egypt. You can also download the Memorandum of Understanding.
The identification process
The identification process started with an analysis of the Multi Annual Strategic Plan (MASP) of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN). The Project Outline is based on the MASP and several national policy documents and studies related to agriculture, water, TVET and gender issues in Egypt. In addition to two identification missions, meetings were held with:
- the EKN and six Egyptian ministries;
- sectoral authorities and experts;
- other stakeholders, including universities, involved in gender and labour market issues, the TVET sector and the private agro sector;
- international donors who are active in Egypt.
Growth and distribution and empowerment
Together with the EKN, Nuffic has identified the following sectors within the two areas growth and distribution and empowerment:
- agriculture
- water
- women's empowerment
NICHE support will be given to post-secondary education, with a strong emphasis on TVET in the agriculture and water sector. Gender equality and women's empowerment has been identified as a sector on its own and as a fixed component in water and agriculture projects. NICHE will aim to create a better match between demand and supply by strengthening links between education and the labour market.
Hence, each NICHE project in Egypt will be preceded by a labour market analysis. NICHE will complement the activities of the EKN and other donors.
Focus themes
In each selected sector, a number of focus themes have been identified. Although water and agriculture are presented as two separate sectors, NICHE pursues an integrated approach to these sectors.
