Huygens Scholarship Programme 2011
15 Mar 2011
The first of February 2011 marked the closing deadline for applications for the Huygens Scholarship Programme – a fund set up to provide financial grants to outstanding students.
The past year saw expanded promotion of the Huygens Programme amongst qualifying Dutch students. This resulted in a slight rise in the number of scholarship applications for international study from Dutch students relative to previous years. In 2010 that number was 330, compared to 400 this year. A notable development for 2011 is the new interest in Hungary, Indonesia and Suriname as destinations.
Scholarship applications from international students had steadily increased for several years, but this year they dropped from a total of 1,700 to 1,400 applications. A possible explanation is Nuffic’s emphatic appeals to the Dutch higher education institutions over the past few months to nominate only the most outstanding international students. Also new this year was the higher number of applications from Brazil and Thailand – both of which are countries with their own Nuffic Netherlands Education Support Office (Nuffic Neso).
Scholarship applicants will be notified of whether they have been approved for the prestigious Huygens Scholarship Programme on 1 May 2011.
