Nuffic and World Bank explore collaboration opportunities
11 Nov 2011
Following a recent Nuffic secondment to the World Bank in Washington, Mr Jamil Salmi of the World Bank visited Nuffic on 3 November. Mr Salmi came to exchange information and explore avenues of future collaboration in the field of tertiary education.
Jamil Salmi is the World Bank's tertiary education coordinator. He is the principal author of the World Bank's Tertiary Education Strategy entitled "Constructing Knowledge Societies: New Challenges for Tertiary Education".
Learning for All
Mr Salmi started by presenting the World Bank's new Education Strategy 2020. The ten-year strategy focuses on the crucial goal of "Learning for All", by investing early, smartly, and for all. It draws on consultations with governments, development partners, students, teachers, researchers, civil society, and business representatives from more than 100 countries.
A shift towards tertiary education
Mr Salmi explained that the World Bank, which traditionally focuses on basic education, has recently started shifting towards a more balanced approach, which includes tertiary education.
Multi-donorship creates collaboration opportunities
One of the priorities of the Education Strategy is multi-donorship. This is where a possible collaboration with Nuffic may come in, considering Nuffic's long standing expertise in capacity building in tertiary education institutions in developing countries, donor coordination and harmonisation and diploma recognition and expertise.
