Workshop puts TVET in the spotlight

16 Jun 2011

On 24 March 2011 Nuffic organised a TVET workshop for Dutch implementers of NICHE projects.

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is one of the main cross-cutting themes of NICHE. The extent to which TVET is improved in NICHE countries largely depends on how projects respond to changing trends and demands in the labour market.

In order to improve TVET delivery through capacity building interventions that will lead to sustainable outputs Nuffic organised a one-day TVET workshop for Dutch implementing partners.

The workshop started with a brief word of welcome by Joep Houterman followed by a key-note speech on TVET in Dutch development cooperation by Mr Chris de Nie of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a presentation by Dr. Borhene Chakroun (TVET expert UNESCO).

Three practical case studies

The second part of the morning focused on two completed NPT projects in Ghana and Vietnam and one NFP Tailor-Made Training in Bhutan with special attention for experiences and lessons learnt in strengthening skills training and TVET delivery. The case studies highlighted the added value of a customised approach and locally adapted solutions.

Open Space sessions

The afternoon sessions consisted of Open Space discussion sessions on a range of themes related to TVET, such as:

  • policy leverage and regulation of TVET;
  • quality assurance;
  • best ways to train teachers in TVET;
  • private sector involvement.

The content and findings of the sessions can be downloaded below:

Evaluation

A short survey, conducted among the participants after the workshop, showed that a majority of the participants left the workshop venue with more insights on TVET and a bigger network.

What's next?

Thanks to active participation and lively discussions the workshop produced a lot of ideas on how to improve NICHE projects focusing on TVET. It was an opportunity to bring partners together to share their experiences and  know-how on TVET delivery. Finally, it offered approaches and tools that are already being successfully used by others.

Nuffic is considering a range of follow-up activities including:

  • an internal workshop for Nuffic colleagues who did not attend the workshop;
  • a substantial contribution to the planned regional meeting for Southern partners to include lessons learned and the outputs of the workgroup sessions;
  • studies and stakeholder meetings aimed at ensuring that projects are service oriented and contribute to labour market demands.
