NFP gives more exposure to alumni activities

16 Sep 2010

Alumni activities is one of the NFP sub-programmes and provides funds for refresher courses for NFP alumni, as well as start-up grants for Netherlands Alumni Associations (NAAs) and grants to co-finance activities organized by Netherlands Alumni Associations.

The NFP Alumni Activities sub-programme offers the following subsidies:

For NFP alumni

  • refresher courses

For Netherlands Alumni Associations (NAAs)

  • start-up subsidies
  • co-financing of alumni activities

Refresher courses

The aim of refresher courses is to contribute to institutional development of the employing organizations of NFP alumni and to increase the impact and prolong the effect of earlier NFP-funded training. Refresher courses may be conducted by either the Dutch organization that provided the original training course or a different Dutch institution with the same expertise. Refresher courses should always be in the same field of study as the original NFP-funded training.

The duration of the courses is usually two weeks with up to twenty participants. Refresher courses can be attended by colleagues of NFP alumni, but only to a limited extent. They must be direct colleagues and work in the same organization or organizational unit as the NFP alumnus. One or two staff members of the partner institute are also allowed to attend the course. Refresher courses must be held in one of the NFP countries.

Refresher course participants must meet a set of NFP eligibility criteria. Please check www.nuffic.nl/nfp for an overview of these criteria.

Application and selection

Proposals for refresher courses in 2011 should be directly submitted to Nuffic before 1 November 2010. Proposals may be submitted by organizations in developing countries, NFP alumni or by the Dutch organization that will provide the course.

Nuffic selects refresher courses by assessing the requests against the eligibility criteria and technical criteria. In the selection process, preference is given to courses which:

  • are jointly implemented by a Dutch institution and an institution or organization in the country or region concerned;
  • guarantee that at least half of the participants are female;
  • have a clearly-demonstrated gender component;
  • take place in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Start-up subsidies

A potential Netherlands Alumni Association in an NFP country can apply for a start-up subsidy of up to € 3,000. Subsidies are primarily to be used to create the necessary infrastructure and to guarantee the basic conditions for a successful start.

Application and selection

Applications can only be submitted by an NAA’s governing board and not by an individual. There is no deadline and proposals may be submitted throughout the year. Associations can apply for a start-up subsidy by submitting their application to the Netherlands embassy or consulate in their own country, accompanied by the necessary documentation. Associations applying for a start-up subsidy must meet a set of NFP eligibility criteria.

The amount of funds available for start-up subsidies is limited. Therefore, applications may be turned down even if they meet all the eligibility criteria. Download the 2011-2012 NFP brochure below for more information.

Co-financing of alumni activities

A Netherlands Alumni Association in an NFP country can apply for a co-financing subsidy of up to € 5,000. At least 25% of the total budget must come from other funds.

Application and selection

There is no deadline and proposals may be submitted throughout the year. The application must be submitted to Nuffic at least three months before the start of the activity. Co-financing requests must meet a set of NFP eligibility criteria.

The amount of funds available for co-financing of NFP alumni activities is limited. Therefore, applications may be turned down even if they meet all the eligibility criteria. Download the 2011-2012 NFP brochure below for more information.
