NAAK prepares NFP scholars for Dutch study experience
24 Dec 2009
The Netherlands Alumni Association of Kenya (NAAK) has been organising yearly pre-departure briefings for NFP scholars since its creation in 2004.
A new batch, a new briefing
This year’s briefing was held in Nairobi and attracted more than thirty NFP scholars preparing for a new educational experience at a Dutch higher education institute. They were welcomed by chairperson Laurence Sewe Oloo (1998, Maastricht School of Management), Isaack Otieno Okero (ISS, 1999) and Ms Dorine Lugendo (University of Twente, 2001).
Ongoing experience
The scholars were first introduced to NAAK’s history and activities. Laurence, Isaack and Dorine drew from their international experience to introduce them to the various aspects of social and academic life in the Netherlands. Laurence talked about his impressions of Dutch culture and potential friction areas. He also spoke about the benefits of attending refresher courses after returning home. He also encouraged participants to join NAAK after their return to enjoy the full benefits of the association in their further career.
A different, but challenging climate
Isaack Otieno, also a founding member of NAAK, coordinates the ISS Alumni-Kenya Chapter. He urged NFP participants to achieve their academic goals during their stay in the Netherlands: ‘go enjoy yourselves and ensure you realise and exceed your expectations’. Borrowing from his own study experience at the ISS in The Hague, he warned the participants about the different academic climate. He also explained that home expectations will be high when they return.
Full immersion is the way to go
In her address, NAAK secretary Dorine invited the participants to actively join social, cultural and extracurricular activities at their Dutch university or institution. She also asked the participants to be good ambassadors of Kenya.
Personal approach
After a tea break which provided an opportunity to interact with NAAK officials and watch a short video about life in the Netherlands, the briefing resumed with a discussion session on academic and social life in Holland and “do’s and don’ts”. Thanks to its good relationship with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nairobi and the various Chapters (ISS, Delft, IHE, ITC) in Kenya, NAAK is a good source of information for future scholars.
Alumni power
Nuffic acknowledges the important role of alumni and actively supports alumni-related activities through its Holland Alumni network (HAn). The Holland Alumni network aims to set up and facilitate an international network of Holland alumni, alumni-to-be, and relevant organizations.
