International Higher Education Market
The past two decades have seen the emergence of an international higher education market that is now developing faster than ever before. More and more players are participating in this market: public and private higher education institutions, educational and testing companies, ministries of education and quality assurance and accreditation agencies.
Within this international market, there is increasing competition between public and private higher education institutions to attract international students and staff, international academic and corporate partners for collaboration, and research funds.
Higher education institutions in many countries are therefore making efforts to internationalize their strategies and activities, to offer degree programmes abroad and to implement support services for international students.
In order to determine effective strategies for sustainable collaboration, and to reach (or consolidate) a good position in international student markets, higher education institutions need to be aware of the latest developments in the global market. They need to know, for instance, about levels of higher education demand and policy developments in countries they wish to collaborate with. Institutions also need to be aware of existing higher education cooperation. They also need to understand the ways in which the international higher education market is changing: which new players are entering the arena and which new forms of cooperation are emerging.
This dossier aims to provide information on trends and developments in this global market and the national and institutional strategies that are being developed locally in order to operate and compete globally.
