Impact of Internationalisation
In the past, research on the internationalisation of higher education frequently focused on the rationales of internationalisation. However, knowledge about the extent to which internationalisation has actually led to the educational, cultural, political and economic benefits it promises is non-existent, hidden or scattered.
At the same time, the benefits of internationalization can no longer be taken for granted. One can even sense the emergence of resistance against internationalization, or at least against the way internationalization is evolving in the contemporary world of higher education.
It is therefore important to illuminate the real impact of internationalization. This will also improve insight into the ways in which higher education institutions can increase and fully exploit the positive effects of internationalization and avoid negative side effects.
Increasing interest in the real effects of internationalization is also a response to wider developments in the field of higher education, for instance the call for transparency and accountability from governments, institutions and students, the mainstreaming of internationalization in institutional strategies and the need for international comparison and benchmarks coming from higher education institutions.
This dossier focuses on the real outcomes of internationalization processes and international activities at higher education institutions. What are the outcomes for the different stakeholders in higher education? Which indicators are best for measuring these outcomes? Which activities and strategies are most effective? And how can we improve the quality of internationalization in order to take advantage of its benefits? These and related questions are addressed in this dossier.
