Short description of the higher education system

Higher education is offered at public and private universities and institutions of higher professional education. Students can choose to study full-time or part-time. (Source: Ministry of Education)

The Higher Education Department (HED), established under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, is charged with planning and overseeing the development of Kosovo’s higher education system. The HED is also responsible for the recognition of foreign diplomas and verifies the documentation of students wishing to study abroad.

Types of degrees

Higher education institutions offer study programmes leading to bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees.

Quality assurance and accreditation

The quality of public and private higher education institutions is assessed by the Kosovo Accreditation Agency (KAA). Established by the Ministry under the national law on higher education, the KAA promotes quality by guaranteeing the high standard of education and scientific research at accredited institutions.

Recent reforms

Higher education standards in Kosovo are based on the European standards. Major changes have recently been made in Kosovo’s network of higher education institutions and several legal norms have been amended to support institutional development. A new national platform for the development of the higher education system has also been drafted based on the objectives of the Bologna process.
