Following a decision by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Dutch cabinet called for the termination of the Nuffic-run Huygens Scholarship Programme as from 1 January 2012. This has no consequences for students currently receiving a scholarship. It is no longer possible to apply for a Huygens scholarship.

Het ministerie van Onderwijs Cultuur en Wetenschap (OCW) heeft besloten dat het door de Nuffic beheerde programma Huygens Scholarship Programme wordt beëindigd per 1 januari 2012. Dit heeft geen gevolgen voor huidige bursalen.
