Nuffic manages European Area for Recognition project

10 Mar 2010

Over the next two years, Nuffic will be managing the European Area for Recognition (EAR) project. This project is aimed at improving consistency in the recognition of international study qualifications.

The Bologna Process has revealed that recognition-related problems often hamper the international mobility of students. The procedures for the assessment of international study qualifications in Europe are highly diverse and sometimes outdated. Although nearly all European countries have now ratified the Lisbon Convention, this has proven to be no guarantee for a smooth and practical application of the convention’s principles.

European Recognition Manual

Within the context of previous projects in recent years, Nuffic has already produced recommendations regarding a number of practical aspects of the evaluation of study qualifications. The aim of the EAR project is to produce a European Recognition Manual that provides a practical description of what should be the standard procedures, criteria and results of credential evaluation. The Lisbon Convention, its supporting documentation and the results of previous projects will be taken as a basis for this.

The European networks should then adopt and apply the Recognition Manual, producing a more consistent framework for recognition in Europe. The EAR project is being conducted by a large team of eight recognition centres and two international experts.
