Leiden University: International Symposium on University Ranking

07 Jan 2009

On 6 and 7 February 2009 Leiden University will organize the third edition of its International Symposium on University Ranking at Leiden University. The symposium will address the most recent issues in the field of global university rankings.

After two successful symposia in 2006 and 2007, Leiden University will now host twelve speakers, all of them international experts in the field of university rankings.

Why a symposium on university ranking?

There is an increased need for universities to recruit students beyond their traditional (national) boundaries. There is also ample evidence from surveys of students to show that global university rankings are an important part of the assessment that students make when choosing a university at which to study. It follows that universities need to be concerned with the phenomenon of university rankings.

Discussion fora

Leiden University’s response has been to organise fora for discussion on global ranking. It is their belief that such events serve to clarify important issues and influence the design of ranking processes.

Speakers

Speakers at the third Leiden University International Symposium on Ranking will include representatives from leading ranking institutions and organisations that research rankings, such as CHE, Times Higher, CEPES-UNESCO and Leiden University. Furthermore, speakers from education institutions will be present to give participants insights in how to deal with and react upon the use of university rankings.
