Mr Jan Veldhuis

Jan VeldhuisJan Veldhuis (1938) was President of the Executive Board of Utrecht University from 1986 to the end of 2003. After studying in the United States through the Fulbright Programme, he started his career at the European Cooperation department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague (1968-1970). He then moved on to various positions at Leiden University (1970-1974).

From 1974 to 1979, he was Deputy Secretary-General at the Ministry of Education and Science, and from 1979 to 1986 he was Director-General of Education and Inspection, and also Inspector-General of Education. In 1986, he accepted the position of President of the Executive Board at Utrecht University, and held the post until his retirement.

Mr Veldhuis still holds a variety of senior posts in the education sector, in the world of science and technology, in healthcare and at international organisations, such as QANU (Quality Assurance Netherlands Universities), Carmel Colleges, TNO, Diakonessen Hospital, the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation and the Netherlands Society for International Affairs. He has served on Nuffic’s Board of Trustees since December 2004, and has been the Chair since 12 July 2010. Mr Veldhuis is also chairman of the Remuneration Committee.
