Shaping the Future – conference proceedings
On 2-3 July 2012 the conference ‘Shaping the Future: new perspectives on Dutch cooperation in post-secondary education and training for sustainable development ’ took place in The Hague. The conference was organised by Nuffic on behalf of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss directions and perspectives for the design of new Dutch programmes for cooperation in post-secondary education and training. The proceedings of the conference became available in October.

Skills Development Pathways in Asia: Employment and Skills Strategies in Southeast Asia initiative (ESSSA)
Skills and educational development for inclusive and sustainable growth are becoming significant drivers in OECD countries. Asian countries are not lagging behind on the challenge; on the contrary, they are taking diverse pathways in skills training and education to achieve the end. This report focuses on current efforts in 15 countries in the Asian region: Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. Together, these countries represent one of the most dynamic regions in the world, with steady growth, even during the recent financial crisis.

In 2011 it reached almost USD 55 billion, equivalent to 40% of gross official development assistance (ODA) from OECD Development Assistance Committee member countries. The World Inequality Database on Education (WIDE) highlights the powerful influence of circumstances, such as wealth, gender, ethnicity and location, over which people have little control but which play an important role in shaping their opportunities for education and wider life chances. It draws attention to unacceptable levels of education inequality across countries and between groups within countries, with the aim of helping to inform policy design and public debate.
