Outcomes of a survey held by Nuffic Neso Taipei show that in Taiwanese society parents play an important role in the decision-making processes of their offspring, when it comes to studying abroad.

Wishes and expectations

Taiwanese parents who want their child to study abroad think that their child will benefit from exposure to different cultures and that this experience will benefit his or her career opportunities. Hence, Taiwanese parents have high expectations when it comes to sending or allowing their child to study abroad. More specifically, the parents expect that their child will gain international experience, receive high quality education, and improve career prospects. Parents also expect the destination country to be safe and prefer that a destination country has a low cost of living.

Decision-making process

Taiwanese parents mainly have a say in which destination country is selected. Noteworthy in this respect is that many parents only consider countries where relatives are living. The prospective students appear to have more autonomy in their choice of specific fields of study.

The report also includes details on which sources the parents use to find information on studying abroad, and which kind of information they value the most. Dutch higher education institutions can therefore use the report to optimise their positioning strategies.

Earlier this year, Nuffic Neso Korea and the Nuffic Neso Desk India published the results of their own surveys among parents of prospective students. You can download all these parent survey reports from the Nuffic market information website (login required).
