Science without Borders opens continuous PhD and post-doc Call

Publication date: Dec 13, 2012 10:20 AM

Last month Science without Borders Holland (SwB Holland) successfully finalised its first call at bachelor’s level. The programme is now opening a call at PhD and post-doc level.

In contrast to the bachelor’s call, which will open and close periodically, the call at PhD and post-doc level will be open continuously until the end of the SwB Holland programme.

Four modalities

The call has four modalities in which scholarships are offered.

  • A one year sandwich PhD modality, for which the Dutch institution receives a flat-rate compensation of € 10,000.
  • A two year PhD sandwich modality directed at setting up a double degree programme through institutional cooperation between Brazilian and Dutch institutions.
  • A full PhD programme at a Dutch institution to obtain a Dutch degree, with a maximum duration of four years.
  • A full post-doc programme with a maximum duration of two years.

In all modalities students and researchers receive a monthly allowance for personal care, accommodation and travel. The students and researchers should therefore be treated as scholarship holders, which means the Dutch universities and research institutes should not pay out salaries.

Interested Brazilian students and researchers may contact any Dutch university or research institute. They should apply at this institution first and obtain an unconditional admission letter, before applying for the scholarship.

After receiving the unconditional admission letter from the Dutch institution, the students and researchers apply for the scholarship in Brazil. There will be three moments per year, in the months of May, September and December (subject to change), at which the Brazilian executing bodies will decide who is granted a scholarship.

Dutch higher education institutions can also actively post vacancies on the the SwB portal. The vacancies will be available on a separate page of the portal listed by the programme´s priority areas. You can send a short introductory text of the vacancy with the relevant details, such as research area, duration, language requirements, contact details and a link to more specific information  to swbholland[at]nesobrazil.org. Nuffic Neso Brazil will place your vacancy and send you the link for verification.

Check your contact details

At the SwB Holland portal the contact details of all Dutch institutions are listed per SwB priority area to facilitate Brazilians in their search for opportunities.

Nuffic Neso Brazil kindly requests Dutch higher education institutions to visit the portal and verify if their information is correct. You can send requests for a change in details to swbholland[at]nesobrazil.org.

Strengthening the Brazilian economy

SwB Holland is part of the Brazilian scholarship programme Science without Borders, through which the Brazilian federal government aims to send abroad 75,000 academics, at bachelor’s, PhD and post-doc level, between now and 2015. Their education abroad is to consolidate the quality of Brazilian higher education as well as to strengthen the economy in priority areas.

Nuffic facilitates SwB Holland on behalf of the Brazilian national Council for Scientific and technological Development (CNPq).
