At a recent event ‘Women in Warzones: Peace Lords for Change’, Dutch politicians, civil servants, field workers, students and activists came together to discuss the importance of Dutch support for women in conflict areas. Cooperation between Dutch partners and local experts is essential.

On 11 December 2012, 250 participants joined in a lively debate about the most constructive way to support women, peace and security in regions affected by war and armed conflict. The event was organised by the Dutch National Action Plan (NAP 1325) and its co-signatories. Nuffic is also a co-signatory member, as mainstreaming gender is an important theme in Nuffic’s work.

Debate

A public debate was led by Arabist Petra Stienen and journalist Frenk van der Linden. Dutch Members of Parliament Ingrid Caluwé (VVD), Bram van Oijk (GL), Agnes Mulder (CDA), and Marit Maij (PvdA) joined in the discussion.

Mr Van Ojik called to bridge the gap between our ideals and reality. According to him, the Netherlands should support women financially, but also through diplomacy and other possible means. Ms Caluwé sees an important role for embassies to invite more women to the negotiating table and as interlocutors. According to ms Mulder, the Netherlands must therefore lead by example and put women in high diplomatic posts.

NAP 1325

The National Action Plan is based on the Security Council Resolution 1325, stressing the need for women to be present in peace and reconstruction processes. In the Netherlands, three ministries and 41 civil society organisations work together in their efforts to stimulate women worldwide to actively participate in politics and society in their country.

It is quite unique that so many different organisations have joined forces for this purpose. This has led to more focused and intensive cooperation between Dutch NGOs.
